New research published by Utility Dive finds that data centers building behind-the-meter natural gas generation will shift grid costs onto residential and commercial ratepayers who cannot avoid utility charges. The plants allow data centers to bypass grid fees while still drawing on backup grid power during outages, creating an unequal cost burden.
