An oil leak at Damac Digital Thailand's BKK 01 facility on Rama 9 Road in Bangkok contaminated 32 cubic meters of water before being contained and cleaned up. Residents reported oil and chemical odors rising from drains, prompting an emergency response Monday evening that included oil-absorbing booms and an environmentally friendly solution to break down oil molecules. Contractors then removed 32 cubic meters of contaminated water and sludge from the system. Thailand's Pollution Control Department confirmed no volatile organic compounds or hydrogen sulfide remained in the air after the clean-up, though monitoring will continue; Damac Digital has not disclosed the cause of the leak.
The incident highlights the potential for data center infrastructure failures to directly affect surrounding municipal water systems, drawing regulatory attention from national pollution authorities. Damac Digital, the data center arm of UAE-based Damac and formerly known as Edgnex, announced its Bangkok facility in 2024 as a two-building, 20MW campus, meaning the reputational and regulatory consequences of this leak arrive as the project is still establishing itself in the market.
