A startup backed by MIT researchers has developed a nuclear-inspired closed-loop cooling system designed to eliminate or dramatically reduce water consumption in data centers, MIT News reports. The system uses passive heat exchange principles derived from nuclear reactor thermal management and is being tested at small-scale facility deployments. The startup is targeting hyperscale operators facing water use restrictions in drought-affected regions.
Water consumption is becoming a hard constraint on data center siting in large parts of the western United States and other arid regions, and a viable zero-water cooling alternative would remove one of the primary barriers to deployment in those markets. Successful scaling of the technology could reshape where new AI infrastructure can be built.
