Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has obtained ETL Listing from Intertek and AHRI certification for its JHT-Z270I centrifugal chiller, a 10 MW-class unit designed for AI data center cooling applications, and is beginning market introduction activities in North America. The chiller is a core component of MHI's Modular Chiller Plant, which integrates centrifugal chillers, pumps, heat exchangers, and controls into a pre-engineered platform designed for scalable deployment at large AI computing facilities. The system uses hybrid free-cooling modes that prioritize outside air and closed-loop cooling-water configurations intended to improve Power Usage Effectiveness and Water Usage Effectiveness. MHI reported an approximately 60 percent share of Japan's centrifugal chiller market based on FY2025 domestic shipment data from the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association.
The ETL Listing and AHRI certification clear the JHT-Z270I for commercial deployment in the United States at a time when demand for high-capacity cooling solutions is rising alongside increasing AI rack power densities. A 10 MW-class chiller unit positions MHI to compete in a segment where few certified products at that capacity level are commercially available, potentially affecting procurement options for hyperscale and colocation operators planning large liquid-cooling deployments.
Certification of a 10 MW chiller specifically for the US data center market by a major industrial manufacturer is a concrete product milestone relevant to the sector's thermal management needs at high-density AI deployments.
