Google is considering a 1.2GW data center on roughly 1,000 acres at the West Creek Business Park in Goochland County, Virginia, according to an unsealed NDA reported by WRIC. The site sits off Route 6 and Hockett Road. No firm plans exist yet, and Google is still conducting due diligence. Clay Allsop, a Google regional public affairs manager, said the company is committed to working transparently with residents and local government leaders. Resident Cynthia Haas raised concerns about noise, pollution and lighting.

Why this matters

A 1.2GW campus would be a very large load for a single county west of Richmond. A second developer, Tract, is also pursuing an 872-acre, 900MW campus nearby with more than $3 billion in potential investment, so two gigawatt-scale proposals are taking shape in the same area. The county's Board of Supervisors already approved a Technology Overlay District and Technology Zone to attract such investment, and resident concern is already surfacing.

Why the Digest selected this story

Named hyperscaler (Google), a specific US site, and a gigawatt-scale capacity figure in the headline. This is a major new campus proposal and ranked highest among today's construction items.
